Ways to Prepare For Plastic Surgery

Posted February 10, 2016

Plastic surgery may sound attractive and magical but it is still surgery and should be treated as such by a patient. Regardless of the type of plastic surgery you are interested in undergoing, there is still going to be a recovery period for you. This recovery period can be a cause for concern so taking the proper steps to prep for your plastic surgery may end up getting you back on your feet in no time.

Plastic Surgery Preparation Tips

Helpful tips on preparing for plastic surgery include:

  • Schedule plastic surgery when you're in good health - Plastic surgery can have an effect on the overall health of your body. It is advisable to undergo plastic surgery when you are healthy. The immune system of the body is alert and ready to defend the body as well as help ensure an easier recovery period. It will also help to eliminate the occurrence of any complications that may be likely to occur.
  • Feed yourself with essential nutrients - Before deciding to have plastic surgery, you should look to incorporate nutrients such as Zinc, Vitamin A, Vitamin C, Copper and Selenium into your diet. Each of these nutrients helps with injury healing and overall recovery time. They also help to toughen the immune system and reduce the occurrence of any infections. It is even more important to feed yourself these essential nutrients after complex plastic surgery procedures such as a tummy tuck or a facelift. Speak with your surgeon to find out about any potential dietary changes. It may also be helpful to make use of some supplements to aid in the absorption of these nutrients into the body.
  • Eat more protein - According to elementary school science, protein helps to build a strong body. In addition, protein is very helpful in recovering lost body tissue. It is also known to be one of the most important healing elements for the body. Protein is used by the body to help build new tissues, blood vessels and even repair any injured tissues in the body. Look to eat more high-quality protein such as fish, lean meat, poultry, beans and legumes. The human body requires about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram equivalent of body weight. This means that a woman who weighs 140lbs would need to eat 50 grams of protein daily. In the event of surgery, the protein requirement of the body is 1.5 times the normal amount. If you think you will have a problem eating this amount of protein in a day, you can consider getting yourself a high-quality protein powder to be added to your yogurt, smoothies or shakes.
  • Avoid the use of certain supplements - It is possible that the use of certain nutritional supplements can result in some complications for plastic surgery patients. Complications from these supplements can include heart-related conditions, prolonged bleeding and less than ideal interactions with prescription drugs. Examples of these supplements are Dong Quai, echinacea, fish oil caps, Vitamin E, kava kava, ginger and ginseng. You should stop taking these supplements two weeks before surgery and can only start taking them again two weeks after surgery.
  • Make use of Homeopathic Arnica Montana - Homeopathic Arnica Montana has proven helpful in treating bruising and swelling over the years. The use of Arnica is beneficial after surgeries such as a facelift, eyelid surgery or rhinoplasty. Arnica is delivered by mouth and is also useful in preparing for non-invasive procedures such as Radiesse, Botox, Restylane, Sculptra and Juvederm.
  • Stay hydrated by drinking enough water - Before the surgery, ensure that you drink as much as 6-8 glasses of water every day. This daily dose of water is even more important in the days leading up to the surgery. It is a very good way to keep the body clean and hydrated. In order to avoid any complications with a surgical procedure, avoid drinking any water after midnight on the day of the surgery.
  • Make use of a natural stool softener - It is a common occurrence for patients to suffer discomfort for days after their surgery due to constipation. Dehydration and narcotics can cause even more disturbances in the digestive system. To avoid this, taking a natural stool softener is the ideal choice. You can eat prunes daily as you get closer to your surgery and it should also be part of your diet after surgery.
  • Avoid any material containing aspirin - Aspirin is an anticoagulant and its intake can lead to surgical complications. It helps to thin the blood and it can lead to cases of prolonged bleeding. Any use of aspirin should be stopped two weeks prior to surgery. This will ensure that the aspirin is properly flushed from the body.
  • Avoid alcohol intake - Alcohol is an immune suppressant and it shouldn't be consumed a few days before the surgery. A poor immune system can lead to complications or infections.
  • Avoid smoking two weeks before surgery - Smoking can slow down the healing process of the body due to the lesser amount of oxygen that gets to the cells. Smoking also increases the risk of injury during surgery. In certain cases, surgeons may refuse to perform surgery on patients with a record of smoking until there is a proper withdrawal from smoking on a regular basis.
