Top 5 Most Popular Plastic Surgery Procedures

Posted January 06, 2016

The number of patients deciding to have plastic surgery has been on the rise over the past several years in the United States. While the final numbers for plastic surgery procedures in 2015 won’t be released for a few months, the numbers for 2014 from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) showed an increase in the total number of plastic surgery procedures.

Overall in 2014, there were a total of 15.6-million surgical and minimally invasive procedures performed in the United States. The total number of 15.6-million was up 3% from the year 2013. The most popular plastic surgery procedure (according to the numbers) was breast augmentation while Botox took the crown of most performed minimally invasive cosmetic procedure.

Reconstructive surgery procedures also increased a little bit from 2013 to 2014 as the overall number of 5.8-million reconstructive surgery procedures was a 1% increase between the two calendar years. Here’s a closer look at some of the categories listed by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons in their 2014 report.

According to the ASPS, the total number of cosmetic surgical procedures rose by 1% in 2014 to a total of 1.7-million procedures. In order, the Top 5 Cosmetic Surgical Procedures were:

1. Breast Augmentation – While number one on the list, the total number of breast augmentation procedures was down by 1% from 2013.

2. Nose Reshaping – Another procedure that scored well on the overall rankings but was still down 2% from its 2013 number.

3. Liposuction – The total amount of liposuction procedures increased by 5% between 2013 and 2014. In fact, this was the only procedure in the Top 5 that showed an increase between the two calendar years.

4. Eyelid Surgery – The total number of eyelid surgeries performed in 2014 was down by 4% over the previous year.

5. Facelift – While facelifts help to raise the face upwards on the patient, the total number in 2014 was down 4% over 2013.

While almost all of the percentages were down when it came to cosmetic surgical procedures, almost all of the total percentages for the Top 5 Minimally Invasive and Cosmetic Surgical Procedures increased from 2013 to 2014. Overall, the number of minimally invasive cosmetic procedures rose 4% as more than 13.9-million procedures were performed in 2014. The Top 5 procedures included:

1. Botulinum Toxin Type A – The number one procedure on the list saw a rise in the total percentage of procedures performed (6%) from 2013 to 2014.

2. Soft Tissue Fillers – While not having as much of an increase as the number one procedure on this list, the number of soft tissue filler procedures rose by 3%.

3. Chemical Peel – The biggest jump in terms of percentage from 2013 to 2014 was seen by chemical peels. This procedure notched a 7% increase between the two years.

4. Laser Hair Removal – Rising 3% from 2013 to 2014, laser hair removal was performed enough to be number 4 on the Top 5 list.

5. Microdermabrasion – The only procedure to see its overall percentage fall between the two calendar years. Microdermabrasion fell by 9% from 2013 to 2014.

As mentioned above, reconstructive surgery procedures saw a 1% increase between 2013 and 2014. Overall, here are the Top 5 procedures in this category:

1. Tumor Removal – While number one on the procedure list, there was no change in the percentage of procedures performed between the two years.

2. Laceration Repair – This procedure was still performed enough to be number two on the list even though it showed a 1% drop.

3. Maxillofacial Surgery – Another procedure that showed no change in its overall percentage between 2013 and 2014.

4. Scar Revision – Much like number 3 on this Top 5 list, scar revision showed no change in the overall percentage between the two years.

5. Hand Surgery – One of the few procedures with a difference in its total number. Hand surgery showed a 1% decrease from 2013 to 2014.

The annual report from the ASPS showing the most popular procedures in 2015 will likely come in the first quarter of 2016. Any changes in the most popular procedures, as well as the number of procedures being performed in the United States, will be revealed to the public at that time. Even though the final results are not yet know, there is no reason to believe that the amount of people in the United States undergoing plastic surgery has decreased. If history is any indication, the rising number of plastic surgery procedures should continue for years to come.
