Reasons Patients are Having Illegal Buttock Injections

Posted June 26, 2015

A famous poem from the great poet Sir Mix-A-Lot starts with the line, “I like big butts and I cannot lie.”  Even since his words became a national sensation in 1992, there has been a growing national obsession with women having a large butt thanks to buttock augmentation.  Some women are turning to doctors to enhance what they have going on in the buttocks.  While this might seem like an innocent way to enhance the size of their butts, many women are falling prey to illegal butt injections. Illegal butt injections are loaded with volumizing substances such as hydrogel and silicone that are injected directly into the buttocks. They are intended to be cheaper alternatives to surgical procedures. However, the lower fees come at a much higher cost. Illegal butt injections are not only dangerous to the health of a patient; they are technically illegal in the United States.

The volumizing substances present in these illegal butt injections can move to parts of the body where they pose a fatal threat to the individual. These substances can lead to granuloma lumps, infections, stroke, disfigurement, and scarring. Extensive studies into the subject have also made it known that these illegal butt injections can result in the death of the patient. The materials can be accidentally injected into the blood vessels where they travel directly to the heart causing a lot of damage and even death if not attended to urgently. Sadly, a lot of women still get these illegal butt injections despite the risk it poses to their well-being. The harmful conditions women put themselves through by undergoing these illegal procedures go beyond the harm the illegal butt injections can cause to the body. These procedures are almost always performed by inexperienced unlicensed providers that often make use of non-medical grade volumizing materials. They also operate in unsterile environments and this puts the person having buttock augmentation in less than safe conditions.

Why Patients Want a Bigger Butt

When Kim Kardashian first rose to fame as a reality star, one of the main topics of discussion was her backside.  The rise of big booty celebrities such as Nicki Minaj, Jennifer Lopez and Beyonce all prove that entertainment news shows and gossip sites can’t resist a celebrity with a big butt. The downside of this trend is the fact that more women are turning to illegal butt injections to increase the size of their butt.  Unfortunately, many of them are suffering because of their decision. The decision to have a butt injection over implants often comes down to the overall cost of the procedure. Illegal butt injections normally cost somewhere in the hundreds of dollars as opposed to the thousands of dollars for butt implants.  Also, the shorter recovery time makes it a very attractive option for those with a busy schedule.

Illegal Butt Injections Case in Florida

A June 23rd, 2015 article on the Fort Lauderdale Sun Sentinel website discussed a Florida case involving a woman from Peru arrested for entering the country to perform illegal buttocks enhancement. According to the website, federal agents were quoted as having investigated illegal providers of enhancements “due to the increasing number of instances in which law enforcement agencies have been informed of serious injury, serious medical complications and deaths of individuals who have undergone illegal butt injections of filler material into their buttocks region.”  Officials went on to say that many of the illegal procedures are performed by untrained individuals.  The enhancements are not performed in the office of a doctor.  They’re performed in hotel rooms and in homes through the use of products not approved by the FDA.

While fat grafting is one of the most in-demand methods of buttock enhancement, many people aren’t willing to spend the amount of money necessary to properly perform the procedure. In their desire to save money, many patients choose to ignore conditions that should be a warning sign to them.  Many illegal butt injection procedures are performed in hotel rooms, apartments and other locations that are not sterile or the office of a licensed doctor.  One of the main substances used by unlicensed injectors is silicone.  While the silicone is often meant to be used for metal lubrication, it is also being illegally injected into the buttocks of unsuspecting patients with complications ranging from chronic pain to hard scar tissue to death.

Buttock Injection Patients Should Trust Their Instincts

One of the best methods patients have to protect themselves against unlicensed practitioners is to trust their instincts. Once they find a doctor to perform the surgery, it is necessary to do some research on them.  Take the time to make sure the doctor is board-certified and is experienced in performing buttock augmentation. If the patient doesn’t have a good feeling about a doctor, or the building where the procedure is scheduled to be performed, then it is probably best to walk away from the appointment. Finally, don’t let the cheaper cost of a procedure be the factor that influences the final decision.  The old saying that “you get what you pay for” is true in many cases.  Cutting corners can lead to less experienced people willing to perform a procedure at a much cheaper rate than doctors with years of experience.  Patients are best served by paying the amount of money necessary to have the procedure done the correct way.
