Most Common Cosmetic Surgeries in America

Posted February 18, 2016

The popularity of cosmetic surgery has grown greatly over the past few decades and has reached the point where the number of available procedures is almost too numerous to mention. Regardless of the number of surgical options available to the public, there are some cosmetic surgery procedures that are more commonly performed than others and are often the top choices for people that want to undergo plastic surgery.

Discover the Most Popular Cosmetic Surgeries in America

In no particular order, here are the most common cosmetic surgeries in America:

  • Liposuction – One of the most popular choices for men and women. In fact, men and women combined had almost 364,000 liposuction procedures as recently as 2013. While liposuction gets rid of hard to remove areas of fat on the body, it should be noted that it is not intended to be used as a weight loss procedure by patients. Liposuction reshapes portions of the body that continue to retain fat no matter how much patients try to get rid of that fat through proper exercise and diet. Some of the most common areas of treatment during a liposuction procedure include the thighs, hips and abdomen.
  • Breast Augmentation – Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgeries in the United States. The surgery is performed by inserting silicone gel or saline implants in the breast area of the patient to help her achieve the cup size she desires for her body. Patients who are not happy with their new size, or simply desire to go back to a smaller size, can have breast reduction surgery.
  • Eyelid Surgery – Also known as blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery aims to reduce and/or eliminate bags and puffiness underneath the eyes as well as remove excess skin located above the eyelids. The removal of the excess skin as well as the elimination of the puffiness gives the patient a more youthful and rested appearance. The benefits of eyelid surgery go beyond appearances as it can also help correct vision problems that are the result of droopy eyelids. Eyelid surgery is sometimes covered by insurance if it is performed to help correct vision problems. Patients can check with their insurance company to see what amount of the procedure will be covered by their insurance before deciding to have eyelid surgery.
  • Tummy Tuck – A tummy tuck is a good option for patients looking to flatten their stomach as well as make the wall of their abdomen tighter. The procedure is also known as an abdominoplasty. A tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat that is loose in the abdomen area. Patients often choose to have a tummy tuck in order to remove excess skin after a big weight loss. Also, many women elect to have a tummy tuck to deal with loose skin after pregnancy. The average cost of a tummy tuck can range between $4500 and $6000. Depending on several factors, this cost could be as low as $1500 or as high as $7500. Some of the factors that influence the cost of a tummy tuck procedure include the geographic location of the patient or the doctor, the surgeon's level of expertise and the possibility of additional procedures. For example, liposuction can be performed alongside a tummy tuck. The procedure is relatively straightforward and it usually takes between one to two hours. There are a couple of minor risks associated with the procedure including bleeding, fluid accumulation, scars, a blood clot, discoloration of the skin and more loose skin. Following the procedure, patients should be able to resume their daily activities within two weeks although strenuous activities should be avoided for at least four weeks.
  • Rhinoplasty – The nose is one of the most prominent features of the body. It is certainly one of the first features noticed by others. Many patients have a rhinoplasty procedure because they are not happy with the appearance of their nose due to its size, shape or other factors like a visible bump or hump. Rhinoplasty can change the shape of the nose by removing the bump, raising the tip of the nose or making the overall appearance of the nose straighter. Medical reasons might also be a factor in having a nose job. Structural defects in the nose, such as a deviated septum, can make it hard for a person to breathe normally. The results of a nose job extend to a better self-image and a more confident attitude for the patient.
  • Facelift – Many patients elect to undergo a facelift in order to achieve a younger appearance to the face. A facelift is effective in minimizing the appearance of wrinkles, age spots and other signs of aging on both the neck and the face. A facelift tightens the skin and reduces the amount of creases and wrinkles on the face. A facelift can also eliminate the sagging skin under the chin commonly known as “jowls”. The cost of a facelift ranges between $7500 and $20,000. The final cost depends on several factors including operating room facility fees, anesthesia fees, post-surgery garments, medical tests, prescriptions for post-op care and the geographic location of the procedure.

Cosmetic Procedures Gaining Popularity

With every passing day, there are different cosmetic procedures increasing in popularity. The culture of plastic surgery in America is growing at a rapid rate and procedures that would have been rejected in times past are now readily accepted all around the world. It goes without saying that cosmetic surgery has never been as widely accepted by the public as it is all over the world today.
