How do Nonsurgical Nose Jobs Work?

Posted December 15, 2015

The desire for a new nose is shared by many who are not happy with the size of their nose or want it fixed due to it being injured or broken in the past. While surgical rhinoplasty is the traditional method of performing repair work on a nose, the option of having a nonsurgical nose job is gaining popularity among medical patients.

A nonsurgical nose job is performed by injecting hyaluronic acid fillers into the patient. The procedure can be performed in 15 minutes or less and involves very little pain or recovery time after the procedure. While the procedure is helpful for patients who desire a change in the shape of their nostrils or want to build up their nasal bridge, it is not a good option for people looking to correct dorsal bumps or change the overall shape of their nose. While it can’t completely change the shape of a larger nose, it can give more subtle changes to the shape of the nose.

Nonsurgical nose jobs are not brand new to the medical world. The technique has traditionally been used in the past to fill in areas that have small dents or flaws left over on noses that have previously been operated on by a surgeon. The use of nonsurgical nose jobs has expanded to try and transform the complete look of a nose.

Some doctors have expressed concerns about putting filler injections in the nose because of the high risk of complications. Other doctors make sure to use nonpermanent fillers that can be dissolved by the use of another injection. This is especially helpful if the patient is not happy with their results. The fillers that are more permanent in nature tend to last for a couple of years so it is best for the patient if they are placed by a properly trained and board-certified doctor.

One of the aspects that patients enjoy about a nonsurgical nose job is the fact that the results are not permanent. There are a number of surgeries with results that are permanent and can’t be reversed. The fillers used in a nonsurgical nose job will eventually go away. This is good news for some patients as there are times the fillers unevenly place after being injected. Some patients receive too much filler during their injections and their results don’t look natural. While all of this is good news for patients not pleased with their results, the fact that the results are not permanent is not good news for those happy with their nonsurgical nose job. The cost of filler varies across the country but the average cost is anywhere from $600-$1000 for a filler. Once the filler dissolves, the process (and the cost) must be repeated on the patient. While some patients don’t mind paying for fillers again and again, there are others who feel their money is better invested in the one-time payment for a surgical rhinoplasty procedure.

A traditional rhinoplasty surgery has more permanent results. There are many times that a doctor will fill in parts of the nose through the use of cartilage from another part of the nose. Also, using the cartilage from the nose of the patient introduces a natural element into the body rather than a foreign substance. Also, nonsurgical nose jobs tend to feel softer and less “bone like” than a traditional procedure performed on the nose.

The final decision on whether to have a surgical or nonsurgical nose job is up to the patient. While consulting with a doctor can give the patient a good idea about their medical options, it’s up to the patient to make the final decision on what results they wish to achieve through a surgical or nonsurgical procedure.
