Florida Mother Warns About Cosmetic Surgery Risks

Posted June 17, 2016

A Florida mother is warning others about the possible dangers of cosmetic surgery after the medical emergency suffered by her daughter. In 2013, Linda Perez had cosmetic surgery for breast augmentation. The 18-yearold was only 5 minutes into the surgery when she fell into a coma that lasted 2 weeks. After waking up from the coma, Perez was found to have suffered severe brain damage and was not able to speak or move. It’s been almost 3 years since Perez had surgery and she is only able to speak a limited number of words and can only stand for a few seconds at best.

Her mother, Mariela Diaz, is making it her mission to warn the public about Coral Gables Cosmetic Center, the Miami clinic where her daughter had surgery. When speaking to the Miami Herald, Mariela said both mothers and daughters need to “think it over before going to those clinics, because they never know how they are going to come out” She went to say that anyone thinking of having cosmetic surgery should instead accept how they naturally look.

The breast augmentation surgery was the second procedure for Perez as she had previously undergone buttocks augmentation. Dr. Mario Alberto Diaz, the physician who gave her the anesthesia, attempted to resuscitate Perez once her blood pressure and heart dropped to the point that she became unconscious. He was later slapped with an administrative complaint issued by the Florida Department of Health. The complaint stated that Diaz did not respond in enough of a “timely and aggressive fashion” The complaint went on to say that he also did not provide enough of an adequate airway to allow Perez any assisted breathing while he spent 30 minutes attempting to resuscitate her.

It turns out that Diaz is actually a convicted felon who was sent to federal prison in 2006 for illegally selling pills online. Even though he went to prison, Diaz was still allowed to keep his license and practice medicine following a suspension of one-year after he was released. He is currently practicing medicine following a settlement in the Perez case that saw him complete 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education as well as pay a fine of $10,000.

Doctors do not expect Perez to recover from her injuries. The attorneys who handled her case have started a GoFundMe page to help raise money to cover her medical expenses.
