Cosmetic Surgery Do’s and Don’ts

Posted February 03, 2016

The desire to undergo cosmetic surgery is one shared by many people across the country. Almost everyone has a specific reason for wanting to undergo a cosmetic surgery procedure. Before making the final decision to go under the knife, please make sure that your decision is intelligent and well thought before having a procedure.

  1. Have cosmetic surgery for the right reasons – One of the main things to remember about cosmetic surgery procedures is that they are elective procedures. This means that they are not procedures that need to be performed due to any potential patient health risks. You should approach surgery as something that will make an improvement while eliminating something that bothers you about your appearance. Don’t have the surgery because someone else says you need a facelift to look younger or need a butt augmentation to look better in their eyes.
  2. Do your homework about new procedures – There will always be new procedures advertised as the next big thing. Don’t rush and have cosmetic surgery performed before doing proper research. Consult with a board-certified plastic surgeon about any new procedures that are on the market. Researching the pros and cons of the procedure can help you avoid complications after the surgery is performed.
  3. Ask plenty of questions – A cosmetic surgery procedure can make subtle changes as well as more obvious changes to your appearance. Since the results of the procedure will affect your appearance, it’s important to address any concerns you have with the surgeon before undergoing any type of procedure. Getting the answers to questions about recovery time, possible complications and the surgeon’s experience with the procedure can put your mind at ease before undergoing surgery.
  4. Listen to your surgeon – A surgeon is not only an experienced medical professional, he is also the person who will give you guidance and advice throughout the entire procedure process. The surgeon will also help you set realistic expectations for the procedure so you won’t be surprised or disappointed by the results. As such, you should follow any advice before the surgery as well as any instructions given to you after the procedure. Many surgeons will tell you to stop smoking as well as avoid consuming any alcohol for a period of time before and after the surgery. Following their advice will help you transition back into your daily exercise and work routines. Listening to your surgeon will help make your recovery smoother and help you maintain your results.
  5. Don’t overdo it – Many patients make the mistake of trying to do “too much” with their cosmetic surgery procedure. One of the goals of any cosmetic surgery procedure is to make changes that look natural as opposed to being an obvious surgical change. Patients with overly large breast implants or lips that are too plump from fillers injected into them do not look natural and can lead to others remarking on your newly changed appearance.
  6. Have the surgery performed by a professional – One of the biggest mistakes that can be made by anyone deciding to have a procedure is not going to a board-certified professional. It’s vital to have any cosmetic surgery performed by a doctor experienced in performing the procedure using proper medical training. Also, a board-certified doctor should perform the surgery in a medical facility that has been inspected and approved by the state in which the procedure is being performed. This doesn’t necessarily mean that it has to be performed in a hospital. It does mean that the surgery location needs to be approved and inspected before any surgeries are performed in the facility.
  7. Don’t have cosmetic surgery until you are ready – Having a cosmetic surgery procedure is a big decision and is not one that should be entered into lightly. All surgery involves a change to the body and you need to be in good physical health before undergoing the procedure. Depending on the extent of the procedure, many doctors will require their patients to be examined and cleared for the procedure by their primary doctor. If the surgeon needs any other physical requirements from you, they will be covered by the surgeon during the consultation leading up to your procedure.
