The 411 on BBL

Posted May 11, 2017

Do you want a bigger backside without getting implants? If so, buttock injections might be the right choice for you to get a more prominent rear end with less risks, recovery and downtime than other butt enhancement procedures. Want to know more? Here is the 411 on having a BBL to get a bigger booty.

What is a BBL?

A Brazilian butt lift, or BBL, is an FDA-approved method for safe butt augmentation via injections. During a BBL, the patient’s own fat is removed from portions of the body such as the thighs, hips, abdomen and back via liposuction. The incisions are so small that they rarely need sutures. The fat cells are separated, purified and reinjected into the cheeks of the buttocks. The injections consist of hundreds of microinjections placed at various depths to ensure the transfer of the fat cells is even and successful. The surgeon will dress the treated areas with compression garments to maintain swelling and bruising as well as support the newly augmented backside.

Qualifying for a BBL

In order to qualify for a BBL, you should be near your ideal weight with enough fat to spare on other parts of your body. For example, you should be able to pinch at least an inch of fat on your abdomen or love handles. You should also be in good health and able to take a few days off work for recovery.

Risks

A BBL is relatively safe but complications or risks associated with anesthesia and liposuction are still a possibility. Since the injected substance is your own fat, the risks for infection are small. Other risks include fat embolism, hematoma, seroma and poor wound healing. Asymmetry may occur if too much injected fat is rejected by the body due to improper surgical techniques or not following post-surgery guidelines. Choosing a cosmetic surgeon who is board-certified by the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery and performs the procedure on a regular basis can help minimize risks or complications.

Cost

The cost of a BBL can range from $8000-$10,000 depending on the skill of the surgeon and the area of the country where the surgery is performed. You should never choose a bargain priced procedure over the qualifications and skills of a well-trained surgeon.

Recovery and Results

You can expect some discomfort, swelling and bruising for the first 7 to 10 days and the amount depends on the size of the area treated with liposuction and the amount of fat removed. You must not sit directly on the buttocks for up to 3 weeks after the injections or you might impact blood circulation and destroy the transferred fat cells. If you must sit for short periods of time, roll a towel and place it below the thighs to keep your bottom from touching the surface. You must sleep on your side or your stomach during the recovery period. You should see immediate improvement after the BBL but the final results can take approximately 12 weeks to appear.
