Age is Just a Number

Posted January 03, 2015

With the advent of wide societal acceptance and modern medical technology, age is now relegated to truly being just a number.  The new age attitude that 70 is the new 50 and 40 is the new 30 and so on and so forth, the stigma of  anyone being too old to operate on has ended.  The age old adage (pun intended) of an elderly patient being at a higher risk of complications has fell by the wayside, thanks to a study done at the University of Vanderbilt, in conjunction with CosmetAssure insurance.

Of the 129,000 cases of cosmetic surgeries the teams recorded over a five year period, the numbers have shown that the risks to those over 65 are not much different than their younger counterparts enduring similar, if not identical procedures.  The research teams found that the rate of postoperative complications for those considered elderly and non-elderly measured in at a rate of 1.94 percent and 1.89 percent respectively, posting only 0.05 differentiation.  Of the 129,000 cases recorded, 6,700 cases were patients with an average age of 69, demonstrating that age was truly a non-factor for almost all procedures.  The only procedure boasted a significantly higher risk rate for the elderly was Abdominoplasty, also known as a Tummy Tuck, coming in at a risk rate of 5.4 percent for elderly patients and 3.9 percent for their younger counterparts.
