Eyeball Tattoo – What is it and how it Works

Posted November 13, 2015

Body modifications have existed for quite some time and advancements and innovations in technology has led to different types of body modifications in modern day society. Full body tattoos, facial tattoos and piercings have become quite popular. Lovers of body art are known to be imaginative and adventurous and adding color to the white of the eyes is one of the hot body art trends right now.

Eyeball Tattooing Grows in Popularity

Forget contact lenses which can just temporarily change the color, size and shape of the pupil and sclera. The world has identified a permanent form of eye beautification and people are in love with it. When it comes to extreme body art, a lot of people have turned their attention to eyeball tattooing.  The thing about sclera tattooing, AKA eyeball tattooing, is that it is not performed in many professional tattoo shops. This means that getting the procedure may lead patients to the home or basement of a person that is not qualified to perform the procedure. There is a risk in getting this treatment performed by unqualified personnel as patients risk suffering from cases of temporary or permanent blindness.

Thankfully, it is possible to seek professional help to handle eyeball tattoos. Professional help is necessary in controlling any of the side effects caused by the procedure. Despite the quality of the materials and equipment used by professionals, there is still a risk involved. Experts have expressed concerns about the effects of ink on the human eye after a long duration of time.

Eyeball Tattooing- How it Works

While the results may look out of this world, eyeball tattooing is done with a very simple procedure. Patients are asked to sit as they tilt their head backwards. A needle is then inserted under the tissue layer of the sclera. With the use of this needle, the ink is injected into the eyes. Naturally, the eyes remain transfixed due to the presence of the needle as it pierces the eye. A single drop of ink is released into the eye and the patient has to wait for the ink to spread through the white of the eye.

Eyeball Tattooing Grows in Popularity

People have become more and more attracted to eyeball tattooing over recent years. In fact, growing scores of people undergo the procedure every year. People are ready to jump on the "sclera" bandwagon to add more spontaneity to their appearance. Australia once recorded the highest number of people looking to get sclera tattooing and this is gradually spreading to other corners of the world. Yes, there have been a lot of warnings and calls for caution from optometrists but this has had no considerable effect on the increasing popularity of eyeball tattooing. The appeal of having colored eyes is attractive to many people and they look forward to trying it out.

Eyeball Tattooing in Prisons

People conventionally make use of sclera tattooing to stand out from the crowd but there is an uncommon use for this extreme form of body art. It is now employed as an intimidation tactic by certain inmates. Eyeball inking has been known to be adopted by inmates to look tougher or scare off other inmates. These procedures are often more complicated because they mean that inmates are subject to the use of low-quality equipment and ink.

Eyeball Tattooing – What is the Next Body Modification Trend after it?

There has been a lot of evidence to support the early application of body modifications. Early humans have been identified as engaging in piercings and tattooing. The different types of body modifications that were quite popular included scarifications (cutting words or a design into the skin), tattooing and piercings. In addition, these body modifications were used as a means of identification during earlier centuries. They were also used to indicate possessions and achievements for early humans. Other tribes used it to symbolize a maturation phase which marked the entry into adulthood while some used it as a symbol of heroism or bravery.

Unlike a cosmetic procedure like blepharoplasty which is performed to restore vision blocked by excess fat or skin or remove bags under the eyes, eyeball tattooing is simply performed for aesthetic instead of functional reasons.

Most people undergo some form of body modifications for personal reasons. For many people, it's about the beauty, style and class which the body modification provides. Most times, people often try to just enjoy the attention which these colored eyes or tattoo symbols bring to their appearance. In today's world, there is often not much of a place for tradition and most people with modifications have them to either create a sense of uniqueness or to send a cryptic message. It is common to find different people with strange tattoos and symbols all over their body. These symbols are often drawn for their aesthetic value and not necessarily for their meaning. At this rate, body modifications and eyeball tattooing will likely spread to the different corners of the world. Before long, it may become the next big thing and the latest “must have” body modification treatment.
