Do Selfies Make Your Nose Look Bigger?

Posted March 29, 2018

While most people take selfies to show off their good looks, it turns out taking a selfie can make your nose look bigger than its actual size. This is according to a study by Rutgers New Jersey Medical School.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Boris Paskhover started to notice a few years ago that more people were visiting him regarding cosmetic surgery on their noses. These patients felt their noses were too big or out of shape.

The survey found 42\\% of plastic surgeons nationwide have also reported seeing an increase in cosmetic surgery requests on the nose. Paskhover initially thought it may be an illusion from taking a selfie so he set out to prove it.

According to Paskhover, “Since it’s closer to the camera, it appears larger.”

Paskhover authored a study titled “The Distortive Effects of Short Distance Photographs on Nasal Appearance” or “The Selfie Effect.” According to the doctor, “We compared it at 12 inches, which is an average selfie length and at 5 feet, which is a standard photographic distance for portraits. We found when you compare the two; the selfies end up distorting the nose by about 30 percent.”

Paskhover says people taking selfies should try to hold their phones and cameras further away from their faces as this will not make the nose look as big.
