Celebrity (Non-Shaven) FUE Hair Transplant
July 28, 2015
While there are many people interested in having a hair transplant procedure, the main stumbling block for many is the fact they don’t want anyone to know they had a procedure. This is especially true of celebrities in the public eye on a daily basis. Celebrities don’t want their fans, or the paparazzi, to know the truth about their hairlines. Fortunately, there is a solution in the form of non-shaven FUE hair transplant.
Celebrity FUE hair transplant, also known as a non-shaven hair transplant, is a FUE hair restoration procedure where the surgeon doesn’t need to shave the hair on the donor area in order to harvest hair. The lack of hair shaving minimizes the detectability of the procedure on the donor area. This also holds true on the recipient, which leads to a faster recovery time. Patients keep their normal hairstyle and can get back to work immediately after the procedure.
Non-shaven FUE was invented for celebrities who can’t afford to have visible signs of hair restoration or any downtime after a procedure. Also, celebrities tend to ask for a hair transplant before they become completely bald which means the hair requirements are minimal. They can start with 500 to 1000 grafts at a time.
Even though it is called celebrity hair restoration, or celebrity FUE transplant, it’s not limited to celebrities. Any patient can have this procedure, including executives who are in the same situation and do not want to have any procedure detected.
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
The advantages of a non-shaven FUE procedure include no detectability in the donor area, no shaving or detectability on the transplanted area, minimum swelling, and no disfigurement after the procedure. There is also minimum recovery time involved.
On the other hand, the disadvantages that come with this procedure include limited number of grafts that can be taken in one session since it takes longer to harvest the grafts. It is a more labor-intensive and more expensive procedure.
Many patients think they can get the same number of grafts, as they’ll have with regular FUE procedures. The other misconception is some patients assume that because it’s more expensive, it gives them better quality results for the number of grafts they received. The quality of FUE is almost 95-100% growth rate and it is almost the same in different technique. Celebrity FUE does not necessarily give a better result to patients in terms of higher density or more coverage.
The average cost of celebrity, or non-shaven hair transplant, is more than a regular FUE per number of grafts. In Los Angeles the average cost of this procedure is around $10,000. Of course the price can fluctuate depending on the number of grafts.
The limitations and side effects of celebrity FUE are the same as any other types of FUE procedures. There might be some minimal pain and redness. On the transplanted area, there could be some scabbing, pimples, or folliculitis. Like any other FUE transplant most side effects are limited to the skin level.
The scarring with non-shaven FUE transplant is the same as regular FUE even though the actual punch sizes are very small. The 0.8-mm or 0.9-mm punches bring most follicular unit grafts out one at a time, which is the same as a regular FUE procedure.
The recovery time with a Celebrity FUE is easier than a regular FUE transplant because of the lower number of grafts transplanted. There’s no shaving, so it’s easier to get back to a normal shape and go back to work. It’s a faster recovery time than a regular FUE procedure because of the smaller size of the procedure and the non-shaven area.
Celebrity FUE is currently done only through manual techniques of FUE extractions. There are robotic techniques used to harvest grafts in regular FUEs that are not possible in celebrity FUE. Celebrity FUE Transplant is a non-shaven procedure and robots cannot see and detect a graft like they would in a regular FUE procedure.
If a young patient starts losing his hair at an earlier stage and then gets a small number of grafts to minimize the visibility of the balding area, he will likely continue to lose hair. Most likely, he will need future hair transplant procedures. So in terms of follow-up procedures, non-shaven FUE needs more follow-up hair transplants than regular hair transplant procedures simply because not as many grafts are performed in the procedure.
If the grafts are selected correctly, the hair transplant should be a permanent solution. The transplanted grafts are harvested from the permanent zone, the area where people never lose hair, so it’s considered to be a permanent solution. If the hair transplant is done right, the growth rate should be close to 100%. Even though the hair is replaced to a new location, it behaves like normal hair. It grows and needs to be trimmed and maintained the way normal hair does.
Non-shaven FUE is a minimally invasive hair restoration procedure with effective results. It makes hair transplants available for a large group of people who might not have considered it previously because of the disfiguring changes involved with other transplant procedures. Before a patient proceeds with non-shaven FUE, it’s best to consult with a good, and skilled, doctor to determine if non-shaven FUE is the best option for their needs.
